Why Massage a Horse?

1. To increase the range of motion- Massage helps increase the range of joints, ligaments and tendons, which leads to a more efficient stride, which can improve the gait. Improving range of motion will increase stamina and performance.
2. To improve disposition- If your horse suddenly becomes irritable and cranky, he might be trying to tell you something. A change in behavior could be his way of communicating that something hurts.
3. To increase circulation- If a horse is carrying tension due to spasm, tightness, injury or strain, it might sweat as if it has been exercised. Increased circulation also helps with elimination of waste products from the body.
4. To assess the physical condition by touching- a therapist's hands can detect texture, temperature and tension in the fascia and muscles of a horse. The horse's reaction to being touched is another indicator of his physical condition.
5. Other benefits of massage are: improved proprioception and muscle memory, release of endorphins, trauma and emotional release, flushing of the lymphatic system, and an aid to digestion.
If you know your horse's rhythms and manners, then you will be aware of any changes to them. Stiffness, coming up short, refusing correct leads and a change in disposition are all good indications that your horse could benefit from a massage.
